With a focus on choral music, this year's series will include a free online video guide to choral writing as well as a composition competition
Arts organisation JAM has launched its 2022 Masterclass Series. This year’s series will focus on choral writing. As well as delivering a series of free, short online videos offering guidance on choral writing, this year’s series includes a composition competition with winning composers’ work performed by the VOCES8 Foundation.
With an initial deadline of 20 May, the initiative is aimed at emerging UK-based composers. Entrants will submit sketches of no more than 50 bars written for a cappella SATB to SSAATTBB choirs using texts in the public domain. From these entries, 6 composers will be selected to take part in a choral workshop with VOCES8 and composer Paul Mealor in July this year.
Edward Armitage, JAM chairman and artistic director, said: ‘Having VOCES8 and Paul Mealor leading this choral Masterclass Series is an absolute dream team. The videos ooze thought-provoking ideas and advice for composers.’
The six composers who have participated in the workshop will then submit their completed pieces for performance by the VOCES8 Foundation in a concert at London’s St. Bride’s Church in October. The evening will culminate in the presenting of the President's Commission (£500) which will be premiered at JAM's Music of Our Time concert in March next year.
Launched in 2000, JAM (John Armitage Memorial Trust) promotes classical music in the UK through its annual Call for Music for Choir, Brass and Organ, Masterclass Series, and significant annual commission.
The masterclass video series provides an introduction to the choral voice parts and a guide to choral writing. Problematic examples and practical solutions were written for the series then performed and filmed by VOCES8. You can watch the series here.
The composition competition is free and open to all UK-based composers aged 18+. Composers who submit their sketch must be able to attend the July workshop in person to participate. You can find out more, including how to apply, here.
