Royal Albert Hall announces 150 year anniversary celebrations

Thursday, December 3, 2020

The celebrations will begin on 29 March 2021 - exactly 150 years after the venue first opened

The venue's chief executive Craig Hassall spoke of a determination to go ahead with plans despite the challenges of 2020.

'Since its opening,' he continued, 'this extraordinary venue has borne witness to, and played a central part in, seismic cultural and social change. The interests, manners and social mores of the people may have changed, but this beautiful building and what it represents remains the same a century-and-a-half later: a meeting place, a reflection of contemporary Britain, and a home for exhilarating live performance and events of international significance.'

Highlights from the anniversary celebrations include:

  • A birthday concert on 29 March featuring A Circle of Sound - a multi-media event that brings together full orchestra, singers, guest stars, local schoolchildren and members of the community.
  • Nitin Sawhney will curate Journeys - 150 years of Immigation, a week-long festival celebrating the lives and contributions of immigrants over the last 150 years.
  • A special orchestral commission celebrating the anniversary to be performed as part of the BBC Proms season alongside other programming related to the history of the Royal Albert Hall.
  • The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hall’s associate orchestra, will present a series of celebratory concerts marking both the venue’s milestone and its own 75th anniversary
