Over a quarter of UK adults will be using Christmas music to get into the festive mood

New research conducted by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) revealed that 60% of people surveyed intend to engage with orchestral music this Christmas season. Over a quarter of UK adults (26%) said they would be listening to Christmas music to get into the festive mood.

Since restrictions were lifted this summer, audiences have steadily been returning to live music and despite the current uncertainty over Omicron, 12% of Brits surveyed are still keen to attend a festive concert this December.

James Williams, RPO managing director, said: ‘Whilst we still live under the uncertain cloud of Covid, people want to enjoy Christmas with loved ones this year - and orchestral music has an important part to play.’

The under 35 age group is most likely to engage with orchestral music this Christmas (72%). While 15% of those surveyed intend to listen to more orchestral Christmas music on the radio, an additional 11% said they would be adding more orchestral music to their streaming playlists.

RPO is the associate orchestra of the Royal Albert Hall. Craig Hassall, the Halls’ CEO, added: ‘The last two years have been a difficult time for families across the UK and music venues of all sizes have struggled during long periods of closure. Whilst we still live with uncertainty, this Christmas is also a time to celebrate the freedom to be with loved ones and we will ensure that our concerts are welcoming and safe to those that choose to spend part of their Christmas week with us.’

Founded in 1946, the RPO celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. The orchestra has a worldwide audience of more than half a million people and recently welcomed new music director, Vasily Petrenko.
