Wigglesworth will end the orchestra's almost five-year period without a chief conductor

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has announced the appointment of Mark Wigglesworth to the role of chief conductor. Wigglesworth will start his initial three-year term in January 2025, ending the ASO's almost five-year stint without a chief or principal conductor.
Formerly Principal Guest Conductor with the ASO, Wigglesworth’s new role builds on his 10-year relationship with the Australian orchestra. He will give his first performance as chief conductor designate this September before returning in May 2025 to give his inaugural concert as chief conductor.
Wigglesworth said: ‘I have been working with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for the last 10 years and every performance we have given together has been a truly memorable experience for me. The musicians are exceptional, as individuals and as a group, and I feel there is no limit to what we can achieve together. It is going to be a privilege to work in Adelaide on a regular basis and to have the opportunity to engage in the South Australian community in a more profound way… To play my part in that in South Australia is something I am looking forward to enormously.’
Wigglesworth will balance this latest appointment with his new role as chief conductor of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra as well as with guest appearances worldwide with orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and Royal Concertgebouw.
ASO concertmaster Kate Suthers said: ‘The role of chief conductor is crucial for an orchestra’s identity, and Mark is fearless in his music making. His leadership has cultivated mutual respect and trust with the musicians that I have no doubt will translate to extraordinary moments on stage.’
Established in 1936, the ASO is South Australia’s largest performing arts organisation, presenting over 100 concerts annually and supporting Australian institutions including the State Opera of South Australia, the Australian Ballet and the Adelaide Festival. Wigglesworth’s appointment is an important step, not only for the ASO, but also for the region.
Australian Minister for the Arts, Hon Andrea Michaels MP, said: ‘The appointment of Mark Wigglesworth as the next Chief Conductor of the ASO is a terrific coup for South Australia… As we attract international talents like Mark, South Australia solidifies its position as a global stage for musical excellence.’
