Conductor and composer Philip Stopford will join the society in September

Buckinghamshire’s Aylesbury Choral Society has announced the appointment of Philip Stopford as its new musical director. Joining the society in September 2025, Stopford succeeds Jeff Stewart, who will step down this summer after leading the choir for 10 years.
Joining the Choral Society as it enters its 93rd season, Stopford will be responsible for directing the choir's rehearsals and performances, contributing to the selection of repertoire, and fostering the musical growth of its members. He brings to his new role broad experience as both a composer and conductor.
Stopford said: ‘I am delighted to be appointed as the next musical director of Aylesbury Choral Society. It will be a joy to return to choir directing after a four-year break, further building on the success of the choir under the current musical director, Jeff Stewart. I intend to bring a fun and entertaining atmosphere to Tuesday evening rehearsals culminating in exciting and uplifting performances of the great choral repertoire. We have an exciting program ahead of us over the next three years and beyond.’
Founded in 1932 by Charles Pope, Aylesbury Choral Society is an amateur choral ensemble committed to fostering a love of music and excellence in choral singing within the community. Stopford will build on his predecessor’s decade of work with the ensemble, which has included improving vocal technique and broadening repertoire. After the society’s next concert on 5 April, which pairs Mozart's Coronation Mass, and Marianna Martines' Quarta Messa, Stewart’s finale with ACS will be the summer concert on 21 June.
ACS chairman Chris Dalladay said: ‘We are incredibly excited to welcome Philip Stopford to Aylesbury Choral Society. His passion for choral music and his impressive track record as both a composer and conductor make him the perfect fit to lead our choir. We look forward to the creative energy and fresh perspectives he will bring to our performances.’
