Participants on the new scheme will partner with mentors from all five of the BBC's orchestras

The BBC’s five orchestras – the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra – has partnered with music charity Young Sounds UK to launch Exchange, a national mentoring programme for young talent across the UK.
The new initiative builds on the orchestras’ previous pilot programme with Young Sounds UK (formerly Awards for Young Musicians). It’s first intake of the new programme is set to begin in September this year, aiming to reach young people (aged between 15 and 17) at pivotal points in their lives as they prepare to take music for further study or embark on a career in the field.
Head of BBC Orchestras and choirs Simon Webb said: ‘I am delighted to be extending our partnership with Young Sounds UK. With all five BBC orchestras now involved, we are able to expand our geographical reach and support young people facing financial and social obstacles to progress – either towards a musical career or in fostering a lifelong love of classical music.’
The chosen 24 participants (all of whom have won an award with Young Sounds UK) will be matched with a BBC musicians located across the UK for six mentoring sessions. The new scheme also offers opportunities for participants to learn alongside the teams at Radio 3, BBC Audio and BBC Proms, gaining an understanding of careers and opportunities beyond the stage.
Young Sounds UK chief executive Hester Cockcroft said: ‘We’re really excited to expand our long-term collaboration with the BBC to bring together top-level professional musicians with the hugely talented young musicians whom we’re here to help. As the programme name suggests, this is a unique opportunity for learning for both mentors and mentees. Our young people can’t wait to get started!’
