The new artists will join the broadcaster's talent development scheme in September
BBC Radio 3 has today revealed the musicians who will join its 2023 New Generation Artists scheme. The artists will benefit from the talent development scheme from September 2023 through to December 2025.
Since 1999, the New Generation Artists scheme has supported young musicians as they launch their international careers. Scheme participants receive performance opportunities in London and beyond. The new intake of New Generation Artists will reach in-person audiences and BBC Radio 3 listeners globally through live broadcasts, recordings, solo recitals and performances with the BBC orchestras across the UK.
The New Generation Artists joining the scheme this year are:
- British baritone James Atkinson
- Kazakh pianist Alim Beisembayev
- Georgian pianist Giorgi Gigashvili
- Republic of Ireland mezzo-soprano Niamh O’Sullivan
- Swedish soprano Johanna Wallroth
- The Chaos Quartet, made up of players from across Europe
- British pianist Michael Pandya, only the second collaborative pianist welcomed on the scheme in its history, after Kunal Lahiry in 2021.
BBC Radio 3 controller Sam Jackson said: ’Supporting the development of outstanding young artists as they take the first steps in their career is an absolute privilege for Radio 3: we witness the growth of these performers as they appear on prestigious stages across the country and beyond, and are listened to by millions on our airwaves.’
The newly announced scheme participants will join the seven New Generation Artists currently on the scheme, who will remain on it until December 2024. The announcement of this year’s intake will be celebrated this evening with a special edition of Radio 3 in Concert featuring recordings of the scheme’s current participants from the 2023 Norfolk and Norwich Festival.
