Kings Place launches inaugural Luminate festival

The festival is part of the London venue’s 2023-34 season featuring exciting premieres and residencies as well as creative use of the venue’s 360˚ sound technology

London arts venue Kings Place has launched its inaugural Luminate festival alongside the programme for its 2023-34 season. Set to take place in October, the festival will focus on adventurous new music, making creative use of Kings Place’s immersive Soundscape system. Across the wider season, the venue welcomes residencies from Piatti Quartet, Space Afrika and Hannah Peel (pictured above).

Following the festival’s opening concert by aya, the festival will feature a range of performers including artists in residence Space Afrika, and producer, DJ and singer FAUZIA, who will present a specially commissioned spatialised set in collaboration with with cellist and co-writer Maddie Ashman. Tuba player Theon Cross will close the festival with a spatialised performance with collaborator guitarist Nikos Ziarkis.

The 15th edition of the venue’s Sound Unwrapped series will continue in October,with artists encouraged to make full use of the venue’s d&b audiotechnik Soundscape system. The upocoming series will include performances from Phaedra Ensemble and Laura Jurd in celebration of composer Gavin Bryars’ 80th birthday and Rhodri and Angharad Davies and Hélène Breschand, presenting the world premiere of including the UK premiere of Éliane Radigue’s Occam River XX

Sound Unwrapped artist in residence Hannah Peel will also present a live edition of BBC Radio 3’s Night Tracks, while pianist Christina McMaster and ambient composer Tom Middleton offer music for meditation and The Gesualdo Six collaborate with trumpeter Matilda Lloyd on an exploration of spatialised music.

Orchestra programmes will include City of London Sinfonia performing with artist, composer and producer Bishi in a musical odyssey from from Purcell to Terry Riley and the Aurora Orchestra presenting an immersive performance of Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s In the Light of Air.
