The London Transport Museum has launched a new programme of music performances. The Transported by Culture: Music programme will welcome emerging classical and jazz musicians from the capital’s leading conservatoires to perform against the backdrop of the museum’s collection.

The programme will launch on 14 February, featuring students from Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban. The performers are the result of a recruitment call for undergraduates or postgraduates in late 2024. After a competitive selection process, the Museum has chosen 10 soloists and ensembles to perform three times each until the programme finale in October.

The initiative is part of director and CEO Elizabeth McKay’s new strategy for the museum. She said: ‘Not only are we the world’s leading museum of urban transport but, as a cultural cornerstone of the Covent Garden Piazza, we have a long history of embracing art, culture and design as part of our work. As we look to the future, we want to do this even more. We are therefore delighted to be offering some of the capital’s leading young classical and jazz musicians the chance to perform in our iconic central London venue, supporting their career development and, in turn, offering a unique musical experience for our visitors as part of their visit.’

Revealed in July 2024 alongside new branding and inspired by the museum’s West End location, the new strategy aims to bring more art, culture and design into the museum’s programming to engage new audiences. The new direction has already yielded fruit, with the museum welcoming its debut theatre production, The Truth About Harry Beck, in October 2024 and another theatre production in the works for launch later in 2025 as well as a new poster commissioning project set to be announced.
