Maxim Vengerov celebrates 40 years on stage

Violinist Maxim Vengerov returns to the Royal Albert Hall for a concert marking his 40^th year on stage. Rescheduled from June 2020, the concert (19 September) celebrates the Russian-born Israeli violinist’s career and work in the UK.

The concert will see Vengerove perform with cellist Mischa Maisky and pianist Simon Trpčeski as well as with Marios Papadopoulos conducting the Oxford Philharmonic and students from the Royal College of Music (RCM), where Vengerov is visiting professor of violin.

Vengerov said: '40 years performing on the stage felt like a milestone to celebrate and I was delighted to be returning to the Royal Albert Hall with friends to mark it. Then the pandemic hit.  I am thrilled to be finally celebrating this milestone, revisiting some of the pieces which have meant so much during my performing career. Sarasate will be an amazing arrangement for 10 violinists from the Royal College of Music and myself, and we hope fireworks will be flying! I hope you can join in this special event!'

Born in 1974 in Novosibirsk, Vengerov won the Wieniawski and Carl Flesch international competitions at ages 10 and 15 respectively. Having left Russia at the age of 15, Vengerov has become part of the UK’s classical music scene, receiving an honorary doctorate from RCM as well as fellowships from Trinity College Oxford, the Royal Academy of Music and Cardiff Academy. He also teaches at the Mozarteum University Salzburg.

Vengerov has recorded extensively and received awards including the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (with Orchestra), two Gramophone awards and a Classical Brit Award. He was the first classical musician to be appointed Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and a former Gramophone Artist of the Year and Young Artist of the Year. His documentary Living the Dream, won the Gramophone Award for Best Documentary.

A former artist in residence with the Oxford Philharmonic, Vengerov performed the Bruch Violin Concerto with Papadopoulos for the orchestra’s Carnegie Hall debut earlier this month. Next season Vengerov will embark on an 11-stop tour of England and Scotland with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
