New outdoor home of San Diego Symphony Orchestra prepares to open

Monday, August 2, 2021

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park opens this weekend as the first permanent outdoor home of the orchestra.

Offering 360 degree views of San Diego's downtown, marina and bay, the Rady Shell has been purpose built as the first outdoor home of the city's resident orchestra.

The venue will open on 6 August with Rafael Payare conducting the San Diego Symphony in the world premiere of a new work for orchestra and turntable by Mason Bates.

The Rady Shell has been designed by San Diego firm Tucker Sadler Architects, with performance shell design by London-based Soundforms.

It will host more than 100 concerts and events, year-round.
