ROSL Annual Music Competition awards Solo Keyboard Prize

In this month’s third section final of the Royal Over-Seas League’s Annual Music Competition Romanian pianist George Todică became the first non-commonwealth citizen to take home the first prize. As well as a cash prize of £5,000 Todică will take the penultimate spot in the competition’s Gold Medal Final in July which offers the opportunity to win a further £15,000.

Todică competed against the section’s three other soloists, beating pianists Yuanfan Yang, Siyu Sun and Joanna Kacperek to win the section final, held in London’s Princess Alexandra Hall. The soloists were judged by an adjudicating panel including, ROSL Arts artistic director Geoff Parkin, and pianist Lucy Parham as well as previous ROSL award winners Nicola Eimer, Jayson Gillham, and Melvyn Tan.

Todică studied at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland making his Wigmore Hall debut in October 2018 as a Tillett Trust Young Artist. His recent accolades include first prizes at the Norah Sande Award, ‘Stefano Marizza’ Piano Competition, the Moray Piano Competition and the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

ROSL Annual Music Competition section finals continue each Tuesday evening at Over-Seas House in London, with the Gold Medal Final taking place on 7 July at Wigmore Hall.

The ROSL Annual Music Competition grew out of a series of concerts inaugurated in 1947 and became competitive in 1952. A list of past competition winners can be found here.
