Scottish Awards for New Music shortlist announced

Set to take place on 1 September, the awards aim to celebrate the innovation of Scottish artists

The Scottish Awards for New Music has announced its 2023 shortlist, selected from over 170 nominations submitted across eight categories. Award winners will be announced at ceremony at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow on 1 September.
The shortlisted nominees were chosen by panel of artists and industry experts including Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Dougie Scarfe; Institut Francais’ Mathilde Bezard; Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s Dr Seán Clancy; Spitalfields Music’s Sarah Gee; Contemporary Music for All’s Tamara Kohler and HCMF’s Graham Mckenzie as well as conductors Maayan Franco and Jessica Cottis; composers Alisson Kruusmaa and Gunnar Karel Másson and music writer and editor David Kettle.
Former chief executive of new music organisation Sound and Music Susanna Eastburn MBE will host this year’s awards ceremony. She said: ‘I have seen first-hand how important it is to champion those who create, perform, programme and advocate for new music. These awards provide the opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of the truly innovative and meaningful work happening throughout Scotland and I look forward to celebrating the achievements of all the nominees, I expect it will be an immensely uplifting evening.’

The 2023 awards recognise work completed between January 2021 and June 2022. This will be the sixth edition of the Scottish Awards for New Music, following the awards’ launch in 2017.
