Glasgow-based string group Scottish Ensemble has today announced the appointment of James Hardie to the role of chief executive. Taking up his new role with Scottish Ensemble in January 2025, Hardie succeeds Jenny Jamison, who joined the National Centre for Music in Edinburgh creative director earlier this year after five years at the helm of the Ensemble.

Hardie’s appointment marks the beginning of a period of growth for Scottish Ensemble, as it looks to expand its reach and impact. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Hardie brings to his new role experience across the classical music sector and a ‘commitment to connecting classical music with the here and now’.

Morag Burnett, chair of Scottish Ensemble’s board said: ‘James is a passionate advocate for the power of music. In the years ahead, his vision and energy will enable Scottish Ensemble to widen our reach and further strengthen our reputation and sustainability. We are delighted to welcome James home to Scotland and into his new role.’

Hardie is currently executive director of the Marian Consort which, during his six-year tenure, has  made its BBC Proms debut and launched a talent development programme for emerging composers. He is also music programmer at Norfolk & Norwich Festival where, across five editions of the festival, he has developed relationships with local and national partners including BBC Radio 3, BBC Introducing and Britten Sinfonia, as well as introducing an artist in residence programme.

Hardie said: ‘I am honoured and hugely excited to be appointed chief executive of Scottish Ensemble. I have long admired the daring and originality of this intrepid group of musicians, and their pioneering cross-disciplinary work. I look forward to working with artistic director Jonathan Morton, chair of the board Morag Burnett, players, staff and trustees to continue the extraordinary work of Scottish Ensemble on the concert platform, in wellbeing settings and online.’
