The initiative – organised by Making Music and Classic FM – celebrates excellence in leisure-time music

The London Welsh Male Voice Choir was one of the seven selected ensembles

Brass bands and a flute choir are among the seven ensembles that have been selected for the line-up of Britain's Big Platinum Performance, a nationwide competition organised by Making Music and Classic FM held to mark The Queen's Platinum Jubilee and the radio station's 30th anniversary.

As part of the prize, Northern Ireland's Carme Ensemble, Birmingham quintet Curzon Brass, Fulham Brass Band, Birmingham Symphonic Wind, East London Brass, London Welsh Male Voice Choir and South Lanarkshire's Carluke Primrose Orchestral Flutes have all had performances professionally recorded for broadcast on Classic FM. A recording will be presented to HM The Queen later this year.

With support from Making Music, the organisation that champions leisure-time music groups, a wide range of ensembles submitted recordings of performances for consideration. These were judged by an expert panel comprising Making Music president and composer Debbie Wiseman, Classic FM presenter Myleene Klass, composers Paul Mealor and Ken Burton, and musician Carol Jarvis.

'The impressive variety of celebratory music submitted for Britain’s Big Platinum Performance is a fine testament to the vibrancy and richness of the UK’s leisure-time music scene,' said Making Music's chief executive Barbara Eifler, 'The contribution of hobby musicians to their communities is a vital part of the nation’s musical ecology, and we’re thrilled to have teamed up with Classic FM to showcase just some of these outstanding groups to millions of listeners.'
