The search is now underway for the renowned opera singer's successor in the role.
The international opera singer Sir Thomas Allen has today announced that he will step down from his post as chancellor of Durham University after more than a decade in the role.
Born in County Durham, Sir Thomas fostered a connection with Durham University after a visit to Professor Arthur Hutchings in the University’s Music Department at age 18 helped him gain an interview at the Royal College of Music in London. After receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the University in 1988, he began his chancellorship almost a decade ago, succeeding the author, Bill Bryson.
Sir Thomas commented: ‘Durham has always held a very special place in my heart and it was a tremendous privilege to accept this role in 2011.’ He added: ‘It has exceeded all expectations. I have particularly found it a special honour to be a part of the University congregations. This is one of the biggest days in the lives of our students and their families who come from all over the world to celebrate graduations in the majestic surroundings of the Cathedral.’
He has maintained strong Durham connections and is vice-president of the Durham University Choral Society and an honorary patron of the Durham Cathedral Choir Association. He also spearheads the Samling Foundation, a charity which aims to inspire young people in the Northeast and across the UK to excel in the world of music.
Joe Docherty, chair of Durham University’s supreme governing body, University Council, said: ‘Sir Thomas has devoted time, passion and commitment to the University over the last decade, across so many fronts. We will be very sorry to say goodbye to him and we are immensely grateful for his service.
Professor Antony Long, the University’s acting vice-chancellor and warden added: ‘Sir Thomas Allen has given spectacular service to the University and has been an excellent embodiment of our values in all that he has undertaken in his role. From presiding at countless graduation ceremonies to taking part in student concerts, including performing alongside our musicians for Prince Charles at Durham Cathedral. It has been a privilege to know and work alongside him.’
Now one of the University’s longest serving Chancellors, Sir Thomas will step down in July 2022 after the summer graduation ceremonies and an international search is underway for his successor.
