Christopher Barron will take over from Aidan Lang who is set to retire at the end of this year
Welsh National Opera (WNO) has announced the appointment of Christopher Barron as interim general director. Succeeding current WNO general director Aidan Lang, who is set to retire at the end of this year after four years in the role, Barron will take up the role in early January 2024.
In his new role, Barron will lead and support WNO’s artistic vision over the next year while delivering the confirmed artistic programme. The search for Lang’s permanent successor will begin in the New Year, and Barron will remain in his interim role during the recruitment process, ‘preparing the ground’ for the company’s new leader.
Barron said: ‘As a student at Swansea University, I was lucky enough to see numerous WNO productions during its regular tours to the city. Subsequently I have followed, and been hugely impressed by, the Company’s work throughout my career. I am really delighted to be joining the team now at this important time for WNO. My main priority will be to act as guardian to the Company, planning for its future whilst continuing to deliver artistic excellence in all it presents including the extensive programme in the community.’
With previous roles including general manager of the Edinburgh International Festival, chief executive of Birmingham Royal Ballet, Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet, and Artistic Director and of the Brighton Festival and Dome, Barron’s experience in arts management and leadership encompasses drama, opera, dance and music.
WNO chair Yvette Vaughan-Jones said: ‘We are at an important stage where we need to ensure that we continue to deliver artistic vibrancy, financial stability and equality of opportunity in all areas of our work, but above all maintain stability within the Company. The vast experience and skills Christopher will bring during this time will give us this stability and allow us to ensure continuity of our work, offering exceptional experiences both on stage in our concerts and productions, and through our projects and collaborations in the communities we serve.’
