Sage Gateshead has launched a call for experienced amateur orchestral players and singers from across the North East to join the Royal Northern Sinfonia in a massed performance of Verdi's Requiem.

The performance marks a return to live music-making and will also stand as a remembrance of those who lost their lives to Covid-19.

Participants will work together over several months, initially online but then moving to live in-person rehearsals, to realise a performance that will take place live at Sage Gateshead’s main hall on 28 November 2021.

Dinis Sousa, soon-to-be principal conductor of Royal Northern Sinfonia, and conductor of this performance, said: 'As restrictions are lifted and things improve, we want to welcome a big community of musicians from the North East to join us for a performance of Verdi’s Requiem.

'RNS musicians have created some materials which will help you prepare for this project, and as soon as restrictions are lifted and we are able to invite you back into the building we will welcome you for a period of rehearsals where you’ll be working side by side with the orchestra and RNS chorus, culminating in what we hope will be a very moving performance of Verdi’s Requiem in Sage One.'

Applications for orchestral players close on 31 May. Choral applications will close soon after.
