Membership for the leisure-time music charity has reached an all-time high

Music charity Making Music has announced that its membership numbers are at an all-time high, with the charity representing a total of 4,000 members.

Following two years of disruption to music making caused by the pandemic, this increase in membership benefits the charity’s work in advocating for the leisure-time music community by offering a stronger collective voice.

Making Music chief executive, Barbara Eifler, said: ‘More and more music groups recognise Making Music as their natural home and hub, a great vote of confidence in the fantastic team supporting members with deep knowledge and enthusiasm week in, week out. At Making Music, we all believe in the value of leisure-time music groups for individuals and communities and are proud to play our part in supporting and championing them in many ways.’

Founded in 1935 in response to the great depression as the National Federation of Music Societies, Making Music now represents over 4,000 groups made up of more than 220,000 musicians. The charity offers its members practical resources, artistic support and network development opportunities as well as advocacy and campaigning along with insurance for music groups and households.

Recent Making Music initiatives include helping instrumental groups claim £160,000 through the Orchestra Tax Relief service as well as collaborations with Classic FM to present the Big Platinum Performance for the Queen’s Jubilee earlier this year, and the charity's annual Christmas carol competition.
