Matthias Balzat wins strings category of Royal Over-Seas League annual music competition

Balzat was awarded a £5000 prize and a place at the Gold Medal Final on 24 November

Cellist Matthias Balzat has won the strings category final of the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) annual music competition.
The other finalists were Elodie Chousmer-Howelles (violin), Jack Hancher (guitar) and Ben Tarlton (cello), who performed to a panel of judges including Leon Bosch, Alice Neary, Geoff Parkin, and Emily Sun.
New Zealand cellist Matthias Balzat studied at Waikato University. He currently lives in Düsseldorf as a Masters student at the Robert Schumann Hochschule.
In order to recognise the breadth of talent in the final, Elodie Chousmer-Howelles was awarded the £1,000 Len Lickorish Memorial Prize for a String Player of Promise.
The final of the competition will take place on 24 November 2021.
